Loop pile – all carpets begin with a loop pile. The weaving of the carpet consists of loops and these loops are left intact. This gives the carpet a uniform appearance and texture. Loop pile carpeting is a good choice for high-traffic areas because it tends to stand up to the traffic without showing as much wear and tear.
Cut pile – this type of carpeting is made when the woven loops are cut to the same height and “tufted” – this provides for the plush carpet that you are probably more familiar with. The tufted pile makes the carpet look more dense. There are four types of cut pile carpeting:
Saxony – this type of cut pile offers the soft, plush look and feeling that you think of when you hear the word “carpet”. This type of carpeting shows wear and tear rather fast, so it is best left to rooms that have low traffic.
Textured – this type of cut pile holds up better than Saxony and it is trackless – that is, it will not show footprints and vacuum marks.
Frieze – this is another type of cut pile that is trackless and good for high-traffic areas. Frieze has a tighter twist than textured carpet, making it quite durable.
Cable – this carpet is made from a longer yarn than other cut pile carpets. It is a luxurious type of carpet, but not made for high-traffic areas because it tends to crush and matte more easily.
Cut and Loop pile – this carpet is a combination of the other types of carpet. It is also called sculpted carpet because the combination of cut and loop piles creates unique patterns and textures.
